Dance from Indonesia: Classical and Modern Live from Meyer Auditorium, Freer Gallery of Art

Posted by Smithsonian’s Freer and Sackler Galleries on Saturday, May 12, 2018

The stories of the mask dance drama are based on the Panji tales. The tales feature the adventure of the prince Panji in search of his elusive bride, Sekartaji. These romances concerns with a wandering prince searching for a wandering princess; they are full of mysterious disguises, resurrections, transformations, and disappearances. Panji’s confrontation with his rivalry, such as a villain king, is another important part of the plot. Tonight, we present two dances of the characters from the mask dance drama: Klana and Gunungsari. Panji’s principal adversary in seizing the heart of Sekartaji is the king Klana, a strong, violent and rash king. The Klana dance represents the various moods—some heroic, some romantic—of the king. Gunungsari is a brother of Panji. He is a refined character. In assisting Panji searching for his bride, Gunungsari confronts the king Klana. Contemporary dance: Aside from being prominent dancer and choreographer of traditional dance and dance drama, Pamardi is also trained as and a practitioner of contemporary dance form. Tonight he presents one of his contemporary work entitle Amuck.

III.
